Why "mission cactus"? The picture in the circle in the upper left-hand corner of this page is that of a Prickly Pear, more commonly called a Nopal, a plant native to Mexico. Because of water and food shortages, missionaries brought and planted Prickly Pears near most missions in early California. These plants, with their thick, green leaves and summer fruit, became an important food staple for the mission community. Even today, many individuals of Mexican heritage--and others who have developed a taste for the plant--enjoy Nopales as a culinary treat.
